Cellist Josephine van Lier received her degree in both cello performance and pedagogy at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.
As a Performer Josephine van Lier is one of Edmonton’s most frequently appearing musicians. She is very active on the local chamber music scene as well as a soloist, with performances throughout Western Canada.
As a Performer Josephine is as much at home on a modern cello with metal and /or gut strings, as she is on a baroque cello, a 5 string violoncello piccolo or on a carbon fibre cello.
BACH Suites Project (blog ).
Josephine is currently working on a large project, involving the preparation, extensive research, practicing, performing and ultimately recording the six suites for cello solo by J.S. Bach on four different types of cellos and with two different kinds of bows.
This project is a journey to discover how the equipment a performer uses affects the interpretation, approach and performance of a piece.
Performances will take place in the 2008-2009 concert season.

She was chosen to perform in London, UK in March 2008 to represent Edmonton as Cultural Ambassador for Edmonton Economic Development Corporation.
As a Teacher Josephine is well recognized and much sought after. Josephine teaches cello, chamber music, cello ensemble and music theory.
Josephine is the cellist in Edmonton’s busiest chamber music ensemble, the Strathcona String Quartet
She appears as a Guest Conductor for several different instrumental ensembles and orchestra’s.
Since November 2005, Josephine is the President of the Alberta String Association, the only organization of its kind in Canada.
