French music for 2 viols
One rarely has an opportunity to listen to two viola da gambas. The music written in France at the time required the instrument to have a 7th string added to the original 6-string instrument. The richness and warmth of this combination is unparalleled. The music on this program is among the most elegant, spirited, evocative, and intimate written for these two equal partners. Music by Marin Marais, Forquerais, Sainte Colombe, and more.

from the Italian Renaissance
The festival’s final concert will take us to 16th-century Italy and features highly embellished quasi-improvised music. The art of playing diminutions, (called divisions in England, passaggio in Italy, double in France and glosas or diferencias in Spain) has been largely lost in modern times. It is thoroughly documented in written sources of the sixteenth, seventeenth, and early eighteenth centuries, and enjoyed a remarkable flowering in Venice from about 1580-1620. The concert will draw you into the intimate world of Italian Renaissance music.

L’Estro Armonico
This concert showcases all twelve spectacular concertos of Antonio Vivaldi’s L’estro Armonico. They are the most popular and well-known of all of Vivaldi’s works. It is vintage Vivaldi: lively, exuberant and brilliant allegros, spun‐out cantilenas in Italian ‘belcanto’ style, and a general feel of Italian passion and good humour. The works immediately met with great acclaim after their publication in 1711, giving way to over 30 reprints in the subsequent 32 years. For each concerto, there are seven independent parts. In each consecutive group of three concertos, the first is a concerto for four violins, the second for two violins, and the third a solo violin concerto. The cello gets soloistic passages in several of the concertos. Vivaldi scholar Michael Talbot described the set as “perhaps the most influential collection of instrumental music to appear during the whole of the eighteenth century.”
Our violinists will all be soloists as well as taking on all the other parts.
A concert not to be missed!

Combattimento
Opening night will feature music by Venetian composer Claudio Monteverdi, and the program will be centred around the dramatic “Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda”. The piece is based on a libretto by Tasso and describes the fight of Tancredi and Clorinda, star-crossed lovers who fight each other to the death without realizing each other’s true identity. It is fully orchestrated and effectively written (in stile concitato) to represent the sound of swords clashing, horseback riding, and fully expressing the anger, sorrow, and regret in this story. The piece was first performed during the carnival season of 1624, when it was semi-staged at the palace of a Venetian nobleman. Monteverdi wrote that music had long been able to depict the emotions of love, but it needed a new language in order to truly express the more agitated emotions of anger and the violence of war. The level of detail in Monteverdi’s instructions about how to perform this piece is unprecedented for his time.
Several madrigals, including the spectacular Lamento della Nynfa, Zefiro Torna, and Ballo will also be on the program.

“A Time for Every Season”
First Presbyterian Choir and The King’s University Chamber Choir join forces to sing J.S. Bach’s Cantata No. 106: “God’s Time is the Very Best Time”. Performed with 18th Century Baroque instruments: Josephine van Lier and Sarah Poon, Viola da gambas; and Dorothy Beyer and Lori Klingbeil, Recorders.
This cantata is a multi-movement work with choral, instrumental, and solo sections that contrast some of Bach’s most profound music in times of loss with effervescent music brimming with hope and joy.
Conceived as a concert remembering and celebrating friends and family we lost during the pandemic, we recognize the suffering of those who lose their lives and countries in current times of war and strife.
As First Presbyterian Church awaits the imminent arrival of an extended family of up to 37 Congolese refugees, this concert is a fundraiser for providing new homes in Edmonton for families. All ticket sales from the concert will go towards this project.

Dall’Abaco Party
Baroque cello superstar Elinor Frey has recently discovered and published music for 1, 2 and 3 cellos by Giuseppe Clemente Dall’Abaco (1710-1805). His music is surely more than worthy of a feature concert and the listener will be transported to a different era. The music on this program has not been heard for the past two centuries, and are true gems.

PIÈCES DE CLAVECIN EN CONCERTS
Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764)
Laura Veeze, baroque violin
Josephine van Lier, viola da gamba
Joachim Segger, harpsichord
The complete Pièces de Clavecin en Concerts is the sole chamber music work by the great composer Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). The Concerts are full-fledged trios where the three instruments play roles of equal importance. For the first time in the history of music, the bass does not double the keyboard player’s left hand, but, covering a range of nearly four octaves, has an independent, virtuosic role, of the kind that would appear much later, in Schubert trios!
Never before performed in their entirety in Edmonton, this is a rare opportunity to hear these magnificent pieces on period instruments.

This program of French baroque music from the court of Louis XIV features Edmonton soprano Jolaine Kerley and Calgary based soprano Katie Partridge, with Josephine van Lier on viola da gamba and violone and Marnie Giesbrecht on harpsichord.
Unlike most of his contemporaries, who wrote grand pieces for large forces, François Couperin preferred to pen compositions for one or two solo voices and continuo. Out of an apparently complete set of Tenebrae lessons drawn from the Lamentations of Jeremiah the Prophet, only three have survived, and they are presented on this concert along with a Magnificat, scored for two sopranos and continuo. Also on the program are Couperin’s Pièces de Clavecin and a suite for viola da gamba and continuo by Marin Marais. Both Couperin and Marais worked at the court of Louis XIV.
Rarely performed, the music on this program is very expressive and exposed and the musicians must make the music sound like simplicity itself.
The Program:
François Couperin: Magnificat 2 sopranos, viola da gamba and continuo
François Couperin: 3 Leçons de ténèbres for 1 and 2 sopranos, viola da gamba and continuo
Marin Marais: Suite in a minor from Livre V, for viola da gamba and continuo
François Couperin: Pièces de Clavecin

Conducting La Folia Baroque String Ensemble
A program of Italian concerti grossi by Corelli and Geminiani.
During the end of the 17th century what we know today as the concerto grosso morphed into existence. In its basic form the baroque concerto grosso is a multi-movement work which contrasts a small group of solo instruments concertino i.e; two violins, cello, and harpsichord, against a full string orchestra and continuo known as the ripieno.
The concerto grosso was purely an Italian innovation from the mid 17th century. Alessandro Stradella (1639-1682) an important composer in the Italian peninsula at the time seems to have been the first composer to write a work of music which involved a group of solo instruments with orchestra. Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) was the first well known composer to title his works for multiple solo instruments “Concerto Grosso” (Grand Concert). Correlli’s concerto works were to be extremely influential for later composers such as Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741), and George Frederick Handel (1685-1759).
The concerto grosso had a multiple movement form, usually: slow-fast-slow-fast-slow-fast. The titles of each movement would often be: Largo-Allegro-Adagio-Presto-Largo- Allegro.
Musicians from around the province will come together to play this spectacular concert of works that became some of the most influential music ever written.

A program featuring works by Bach transcribed for viola da gamba consort. Bach’s flowing contrapuntal lines lie well on these instruments, and in terms of getting his counterpoint across, this setting works remarkably well!
This consort is a so called “low consort” with 2 tenors, two basses and a violone (as opposed to a “high consort” with trebles, tenors and basses). Since we do not have any violones in Alberta, the musician playing the violone for this concert will drive across the continent from Maryland to Alberta for this concert!
Given that there are very few professional viola da gamba players in Alberta and given the extreme difficulty of this program, musicians for this concert come from all over the world: Two from the USA, one from Toronto, one from Basel Switzerland and one from Edmonton.
Elizabeth Rumsey – treble and tenor viols
